For being so short, this is a great book. Succinct, yet moving and relatable. The struggle for achievement, the sting of reality, the regret of effort. This book has depth not unlike the very ocean of its setting.

When I first read this book I didn't understand it at all. I had to read it for a school project and it just felt like a waste of time. He gets the fish, but doesn't reap any reward. The sharks get it and he's back to square one in the end. Over the years since I have realized how silly that was. Hemingway is not stupid. The old man goes through the battle of his life and wins. And even though he doesn't get to sell the fish, it's the story that matters. My younger self looked too deeply into the end result of the plot and failed to see the value in the journey. Not to mention all the other interesting literary elements Hemingway brings outside of the actual story. Due to some of these realizations, I was looking forward to reread this and enjoyed it significantly more the second time. This book is so short and so poetic. I loved the simplicity of the symbolism and the story. I look forward to rereading again later in life to deepen my understanding of the Old Man and what Hemingway is trying to say about life.

One of the best books ever written. Underneath the spare prose is a sea of depth and majesty.

This is not the full actual book. It’s parts of it and semi cohesive but you’re getting maybe half of the actual book.
