  • Worst book ever

The only reason I bothered to finish it was to feel the (dis)satisfaction of having completely read a truly pathetic novel. Self-flagellation for something, not sure exactly what.

  • the narrative was good, the characters were not

The pacing of this book is great, super thrilling and hard to put down. But every character interaction is awful, and the characters themselves are very flat. Also has some strange comments about women and black people- hasn’t aged well in that regard.

This book had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Another amazing thriller from MC. I would rank it up there with Lost World and Congo, some of my personal favorites from MC. Sphere was an interesting story with a good cast of characters. Understanding the story was a good chase and an incredible ending.

Generally satisfying, though not the end I’d have wanted. Also a couple of disconnects. All the stated evidence was that the ship had been buried ~300 years, but the characters decided it was only 50 years departed and must have traveled back in time about 350 years. They assumed dates on equipment (did/mm/yy) had to be 50 years in the future; but just as easily they could have been multiple centuries in the future because the first 2 digits of the year were not a matter of discovered record.

Incredible read. My first Crichton and definitely not my last.
  • Pretty fun yarn

I kind of got twist-and-turn fatigue towards the last third of the book. For me I think the forward motion in the beginning was more enjoyable than the ending, which felt a little overwrought to me. The first part of the book had me looking forward to a horror sci-fi romp a la Alien or Predator but what it ended up being was more of a speculative fiction action story with some hit or miss character drama. I wish he didn’t tease me with an ominous and foreboding first half if he wasn’t going to deliver on the scares later on. The book was very easy to read and keeps your interest. Overall decent pop fiction.

Not my fave book of his but still an interesting story. A difficult story to write for anyone I enjoyed it
  • Crichton’s Worst by far

I have read 5 of Crichton’s works. Timeline and Congo being my favourites. This is by far the least imaginative and most predictable. The psychological theme in this book is an absolute fail. Spoiler alert, the “We will decide to forget” ending. What a joke!
