This work of blood, horror and madness is, at it’s heart, a testament to love, collective suffering, and a snapshot of what humanity is capable of doing in the name of love and hate. The stark chirality cannot ever be denied or forgotten. It is a mirror that all mankind must look upon frankly and honestly. No one believed it possible until it happened. Everyone must understand that it’s still possible today, which means that we are never allowed to forget the magnitude of evil that humanity is capable of doing. We are never allowed to forget the truth of how the human condition is a responsibility to all mankind. To do so is tantamount to repeating it. We are responsible for each other, unconditionally and forever.

What an important book to read for the Modern Age. The issue of “Othering” making others subhuman. This event stared Christians and non in the face with evil. Good Christians are fighting back like NT Wright and Rob Bell, reminding people to love. Jesus was Jewish so how horrifying is it that Christians looked at the Jews and thought yes, the oven, this is God’s will. For shame for the Holocaust deniers…. * Aside: The book ends with a timely speech by Elie about Israel and Palestine acknowledging the displacement and begging for peace. Oh Lord, have mercy on those forgotten and left.

Recommended by my 16-year-old son about six months ago. And then he recommended again. The fact that he does and the fact that he recommended this book meant that I absolutely had to read it. I’m glad I did.

A compelling account that balances nonfictional rawness with nuanced touches of tender sincerity. An important work. One that does not draw on loosely, but is expressed with extreme conciseness—and not to its fault, but definitely to its profoundness. May the knowing, caring, and most importantly, absolute intolerance of injustice, blossom in the souls of our future generations. To the victims of similar atrocities throughout history everywhere, we share your experience and have a voice in this book to speak with us…
