Another tale of a charismatic dreamer father who leads his family on a twisted downward spiral path. The mother has moments of great incite, but seems captive to her husbands ‘dreams of glass castles’. They end up in abject poverty. The family barely survives. Somehow their daughter is intelligent and resourceful through it all. She goes on to build a fulfilling life. She succeeds by society standards. She happens upon her still barely surviving parents later and realizes they’re content and where they want to be.

Such a good story

This book was both shocking and inspiring. It really put so many things in the world in perspective. Wow!

Oof! This story digests like a brick! I mean that as a compliment. The details are hard to digest and truly stick with you after you put the book down. Definitely worth the time.

I thought I had a different childhood. She wins.

This was an incredibly touching story of a struggling family went through some unimaginable times. I like how easy it was to read and I felt some much in my heart. I would definitely recommend this book.

A story of dysfunctional parents and their amazingly strong children who manage to break the cycle and escape their chaotic world and move on to adulthood as functioning members of society. As I read this book I kept wondering, can this family ever be saved? I was quite astonished with the ending!

A must-read. Fantastic, eye-opening, and mind-blowing. Jeannette, you are an amazing person. Did you or your siblings ever talk to a therapist? I would need to!

Didn’t realize this was a true story when I read it. So sad what those children went through.
