a voice worth stopping to listen to

I’ve heard this book described as a cultural phenomenon and I don’t think there is any better way to put it. McCurdy’s voice and writing is captivating and sitting down to hear the dark truth of the girl who played my once favorite - in her own words - rough-around-the-edges tomboy with a heart of gold felt undeniably interesting and necessary to the little girl in me that grew up glued to Nickelodeon. And not that it’s worth anything but Sam Puckett alongside Jade from Victorious reigned queen of the kind of cool I hoped I could grow up to be. Her role on iCarly was formative to me as a child and to sit down and hear her story was and will continue to be formative to me as a young adult.
So insightful and forthcoming

This is an empowering book for anyone thinking about pursuing a career in this area. It highlights on the real struggles that others don’t see. It is humbling to know that she was willing to put in the effort to make real change in her life. Excellent read overall and I would highly recommend!
Heartbreakingly Raw

Wow...this book absolutely broke my heart. As someone who is a fan of Jennette from her iCarly days, I am so sad to learn about the trauma she endured while creating some of my (and many others') favorite childhood memories. For her first book, it is incredibly well-written. The way she closes out her chapters with such a powerful sentence got me every single time. It's such a page-turner that your brain can't believe what it just read, forcing you to keep going to process it all. My heart feels for Jennette so deeply, and this book has made me respect her tremendously as both an author and a human.
Amazing writing

Jeanette’s writing is so well thought out and articulate especially for her first book. There were parts that resonated with me so much it made me emotional. I urge anyone who has ever had mommy issues to read this. Even if you have struggled with any type of addition or self loathing. Will for sure be reading again

Very well-written book. I was shocked to learn what she went through. I used to watch her show with my son years ago. That young girl…
I admire her fight and strength.
Very Engaging

Don’t Know Her…

Don’t know her, the fandom, the shows, that era of television…. But, pal, does this stink.
I’m five plus years her senior and somehow I can feel that same motherly breath, the nagging….
I read this within a short span of other ‘meaningful’ works - Joan Didion’s “The Year of Magical Thinking,” and Molly Jong-Fast’s “How to Lose Your Mother,” and….
….and understanding that grief and an upbringing are as unique as an Hermès scarf…. I found Jennette’s story to be captivating and grounded.
To each their own, but this was fresh.

Wow. I didn’t expect this to be so raw, but I am so happy it was. Jennette truly opens up and it’s inspiring beyond words.
