Description

By #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black, the first book in a stunning new series about a mortal girl who finds herself caught in a web of royal faerie intrigue.

Of course I want to be like them. They're beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him--and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

I loved it! This is my 4th time reading the trilogy and immediately after I read it the first time I hunted down every fae book I could find!ā¤ļø. I will say the trilogy gets better as it goes on. Also this book is very much a u love it or u hate it, so be warned. In addition people say this is a romantasy, but it’s more of a political fantasy, and it turns into a political romantasy later in the series. And in the kiss scene it’s a bit spontaneous like she hates him one minute then they’re making out the next I didn’t think it was like that but other people do so be warned. Also the people who r saying that it’s ā€œto young adultā€ please stop, it’s a young adult book, people; like what did u expect. Also it’s definitely very tropey and Cardan is a total jerk and it’s definitely ENEMIES to lovers, like they hattteeeee each other so if u were looking for watered down what I call ā€œrivals to loversā€ then look elsewhere. Like she tries to kill him; a lot, like crossbow, dagger, sword, etc. also balekin he sucks but he gets what’s coming to him in the second book ā€œI surrender!!ā€ Iykyk😈😈😈 also šŸ¦ŠšŸ”’he also gets what’s coming to him but sadly we all have to wait until the third book ā€œletter openerā€ 😈😈😈 Also I made my mom read it and she couldn’t keep the characters straight so here’s the most gargantuan glossary known to man Cruel prince glossary Greenbriar line: Siblings: Balekin - eldest prince, one of the three most likely to be picked for the throne ( Dain, elowyn, balekin.) also lives with Cardan. Leader of the court of grackles Elowyn - 2d eldest, one of the ones in line for the throne. Leader of the court of larks Dain - 3d eldest, the one most likely to be picked as high king, Jude also spies for him. Leader of the court of falcons Rhyia - 4th kid, a huntress, friend of Vivi (not in the most likely to get picked for the throne) Caelia - 5th kid, not much is said about her. (not in the most likely to get picked for the throne) Cardan - 6th kid, youngest, tormentor of Jude. Lives with balekin. (not in the most likely to get picked for the throne) Other greenbriar line characters: High King Eldred - High ruler of faerie, abdicating soon; most likely to choose Dain as his successor. (. Not mentioned yet ) House of Madoc: Madoc - Grand General for the high king, was the husband of Jude and Taryn’s mom for a time until their mom ran away from faerie, raised Jude and Taryn out of obligation because in the rules of faerie ā€œ ur wife’s kids ur problemā€ so even though Jude and Taryn are not biologically related to him they are still his kids. Jude - main character, twin of Taryn and half sister to vivi. Part of court of shadows Taryn - twin of Jude half sister to vivi. Vivi - half sister to Jude and Taryn ( when Jude and Taryn’s mom ran away from faerie, she was pregnant with Madocs heir (vivi) ) friends with rhyia. Oak - Oriana and madocs kid, though he is not related to Jude and Taryn he still treats them like his sisters Vivi is his half sister. Orianna - Wife of Madoc, Mother of oak, used to be one of eldreds consorts. The Undersea Queen Orlagh - queen of the undersea, mother of Nicasia Nicasia - daughter of Orlagh, sent to be fostered on land, tormentor of Jude. Groups: Courts within the high court; The high kings court - Where courtiers and seelie faeries go to party basically. Court of Grackles - basically faerie frat house, they do drugs they get insanely drunk, they are the court of revels. Balekin leads this court. Court of larks - it’s basically an art club, they make art, they do ballads, they sing. Elowyn is the leader of this court. Court of falcons - essentially its the war court, Knights are part of it, Madoc is part of it, there whole thing is about honor and they basically just plot in a war room most of the time. Dain is the leader of this court Court of shadows - spies: The Bomb aka liliver - one of the spies, if u couldn’t guess by her name she primarily blows up things. A half pixie. The Ghost aka Larkin - another one of the spies, he sneaks around and shoots people with his crossbow half human half fae The Roach aka uhh i forgot - yet another spy, he steals stuff, he is a goblin. Jude - hasn’t got her name yet, newest spy. The Grackle protĆ©gĆ©s - Cardan Nicasia Locke - son of liriope and a random wild fae, he also LOVES stories and ballads. Valerian - son of a random general, he is incredibly violent End of glossary, 🩷🩷🩷

    1. There were way too many olden timey words I had to look up that have zero use in my vocabulary. 2. Took a while to get into the story, but it got exciting enough to draw me in.
  • Loved it!

This book is really well written and a fun read. It’s more YA than a lot of other things on the market which makes it utterly refreshing. I like a range of these books and I definitely like that this is more realistically fae and has an interesting family/sibling story that is more complex than most books in this genre. I read all the books and recommend them.

Literally so good!! I was lied to and told this book was a romantacy but it’s more like a fantasy with little romance. Was disappointed at first but came to LOVE it

I absolutely loved this story! Jude is an amazing, fierce FMC! Taryn and Locke just annoyed and angered me. Cardan and Jude made me giggle not only with her defying him but their kiss scene. Amazing book!

I’ve seen lots of good reviews for this book, and it was alright. BUT, boring. Too much talking and not enough action. To many descriptions. Had the opportunity to be something great, but fell flat. I will not be buying the next book. I forced myself through this one and even then, I skipped paragraphs. Also, DEF for YA. I’m not saying I wanted sex sex sex, but a little more romance and tension. I’m also not a fan of women falling for men who have physically hurt them…. Over years. Like one time grabbing her too roughly is enough for me. Anything over that is wild.
