Description

From Marissa Meyer, the #1 New York Times–bestselling story of Wonderland's most notorious villain: the Queen of Hearts.

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland, she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

In Heartless, her first stand-alone teen novel, the New York Times-bestselling author dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Possible spoilers . . Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite stories and tales. To have a retelling about the red queen before she became the queen of hearts is beautiful. The way this author handled the retelling with all these old rhymes, fables, and stories, was beautifully done. The cast of characters in this book were outrageous in the best ways. Also seeing a noble girl want to be a baker because she has the talent, and she is one of the best in Hearts. Her desserts were such a sweet way to show her passion for something she loved with her friend. Jest, the joker, he was amazing with his talents and I loved Cath fighting herself to love him. You could see her in the book lighting up with the Joker, and how she would never feel for the bumbling king the same. I was rooting for Cath through the entire book, and when you knew she had the heart of a queen. I love that Hearts and Chess were two separate places it was quite fascinating to see that the looking glass was the key to both worlds. Raven and Jest were the other ones I was rooting for with their secret mission from chess, with Haigha and Hatta. The cast of characters was amazing and the author did a splendid job. Also the ending will leave you in absolute tears.

This was the best book ever written in my opinion. I LOVED Jest. He was the best. It also made me feel bad for the Queen of Hearts. Before I read this book, I honestly thought that she was a complete jerk, but now I sympathize with her.

This book had me feeling all the feels. It was maybe my favorite standalone book ever. The writing was done beautifully and the food descriptions made me wish I could eat some of Cath’s baking. SPOILERS ~~~~~~~~ The idea of Catherine (Queen of hearts) being just a sweet teenage girl with dreams of owning a bakery with her best friend just made me love her and hope against reason that Marissa Meyer would be like “Oh twist ending this isn’t actually the queen of hearts story!” Sadly she decided no such thing. 😭 Anyways, I found that the way she included you children’s poems was so creative! Like Peter Peter’s role in the book was crazy. Jest and Cath were such a cute couple and I was so sad when he died. I mean I saw it coming, but STILL. I was literally yelling at the book/Cath not to go through that door, “NO CATH! WHO CARES ABOUT MARY ANN. DON’T DO IT!” Sadly she did it anyways and Jest being in love with her followed suit. Loyal till the last. I loved Raven and Cath’s friendship at the end. I know it’s probably weird that I like that two people bonded through a mutual desire to get revenge on someone by beheading them, but hey, it was awesome. The book ended with Cath very mad (in both the angry and crazy sense). I wanted her to murder Peter Peter because honestly I found myself wanting revenge as well. Overall a beautifully written book with tons of detail. Begins in hope and light and ends in tragedy. Also I loved the whole thing with us finding out why she hates white roses! Okay I’m done now 😂 SPOILERS OVER ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks for reading! Also I highly recommend this book!
